The Beach Authority had announced this decision a few days ago : the Mon Choisy public beach will be closed for vehicle access, just like Flic En Flac and Belle Mare. Other beaches in the north with no vehicle access are Pereybere and Bain Boeuf.
While it is true that the sandy Mon Choisy beach nearly resembles a busy street at peak time, I feel that the authorities have failed to take the necessary actions when it was due; public toilets converted to restaurants or even the construction of “private” kiosks and wooden staircase. If am not mistaken, they have not only worsen the situation but also created some sort of private beach area occupied by water sports activities provider with their equipment on the beach.
I find it sad that the beach reached this state today but nevertheless, I wonder if the few parking areas created will be sufficient to accommodate all those vehicles. And your next visit to the beach will be more beneficial for your health since you will need to walk a LONG distance to reach the water.
One thing for sure, no one will be able to do a car slalom on this beach anymore.

I think issues are being mixed here. Authorities have closed certain areas leading to the public beach because of erosion. That’s a step in the right direction. Moreover it is fundamentally more important to protect beaches than to provide parking space for the public.
Most of the time, things can always be done better… However when you talk about other related yet different issues (i.e. private kiosk, public toilet), you are mixing problems and you are losing focus from the main point being discussed…

My point is that the authority has always been unconcerned about the problems on the beach. Can you imagine eating in a restaurant, initially a toilet? Fortunately justice has brought this project to an end. As for the water sports thing, yes, they are part of the erosion causes in that particular area: Planting permanent kiosks (with concrete) onto the beach as well as parking their lorry as close as possible to the beach itself.
I haven’t deny the benefits of closing the access to vehicles but rather my concern because unlike in other beaches, the parking facilities seem to be inadequate.

This had to happen sooner or later. Erosion and the deterioration of the ground by visiting vehicles is a major concern. It is necessary to preserve the beach area otherwise the alternative is deterioration in the near future. Perhaps the initiative does not go far enough. This change will certainly not please most people used to the freedom of close parking under the trees. I too feel that the “old relaxed” Mauritius is slowly disappearing.
