Largest search engine reacts : Google Profile

On reading my feed early today, I found out about Google Profiles.

Now, Google allows you to enter your personal details, links and other information into a profile which can be accessible through Google Search.

You have perhaps noticed, that on searching a somebody’s name, the Facebook profile is among the top results. But, with this Google Profile, I believe that you will now be seeing Google’s own Profile.
To remind you, Google already has its own social networking web site Orkut.

In fact, I have never used Orkut and don’t know much about it, but something is certain, Google is trying to rule over the world 🙂 😛

Email – Gmail
Images – Picasa
Mobile – Android
Video – YouTube
Chat – Google Talk
Office – Google Docs
Web Site Creation – Page Creator
Apps – Google Applications, Calendar. RSS Reader
Social Networking – Orkut, now Google Profiles
and so much more!

Nevertheless, I am a big fan of Google and what about you???

  1. Google is trying to be more than just a search engine and email provider, and as such is making the market more competitive and innovative as well. Others need to keep up with the pace if they want to survive…

  2. I’ve been managing my online reputation for some time now, working in the Web department forces you to that. It is one of the reasons why I shut down my facebook profile nearly 2 years ago. It was coming up before my own portfolio. Its not a good idea neither to mix personal matters with work. I think that I succeeded in managing it quite well. There’s no way for me to let my profile go rogue anywhere.

  3. Google == Skynet…. take care. 😛

Google Profile isn’t anything new – just a way for Google to identify the real YOU (same as rel=me hyperlinks).

& btw how come you missed one of the most important Google apps??? – Chrome? 🙂

I think the only place where Google have already been disadvantaged is social networking. Orkut is a social network more popular in Asia than anywhere else – definitely not a competitor to Facebook (already “booked” by Microsoft). 🙂

& as for Real-time Search, they’ve already been beaten by Twitter. Although Google did acquire Jaiku, they were too late in realising the potential of micro-blogging. & now Google is probably shelling out all its heavy artillery in a race to buy Twitter. 🙂

My own profile, which never appears when you search for ‘carrotmadman6’ Twitter profile is first. 😉

    1. @Sun : As far as I remember, I dont think its a new thing since on visiting the page, some of my details were already there.
I believe its a “Rebranding” exercise to promote this feature of Google.

  6. Having looked at Orkut I am not sure that it would become so popular. Since Facebook was established well before, most friends/family are there and I doubt that they would now use Orkut although some of the applications are nice like the link to Picasa. Probably a case of too late.
