@jon92:
I don’t think that the issue comes on “when” it will be worn but rather “why and how” this was designed for an international contest.
Using the designer’s word (Sophie Bax) :
“La robe nationale est un hommage à l’océan Indien et au drapeau mauricien à travers le bleu et le vert.“, but where the damn are the red and yellow of our national flag?
btw, I have the impression that you are very well informed about this competition, judges and fashion etc. Is this right? In that case, thanks very much for sharing your knowledge with us. Really appreciate this.
@Sandeep Doorgah: Well, mo penser c pas ene photo shoot officiel, juste ene presentation des ‘costumes’ aux medias.

@Yashvin: that was a pleasure to reply your comment! well, the red and the yellow are on the hat!!!!the photo posted here does not reveal much about the hat but on facebook i think you can see it!

@jon92: wait, Those were not my words but those of the designer’s herself, as I quoted.

@Yashvin: didn’t you write ‘but where the damn are the red and yellow of our national flag? ‘??????

@jon92 : Exactly, I did say that in regards to the words used by the designer. I can’t see where she compares the famous red and yellow in the ‘dress’ when she talks about our flag…. Or perhaps our flag contains only the blue and green? euh…
Point to note : My blog post here includes the picture and text from orange.mu.
So, we are basically discussing what has been quoted and shown by none other than the designer.

abt the branding Mauritius subject, I always said that they could organise a national competition…they’d have put the price at Rs. Million (instead of 30millions something they paid..pfff!) and got a much more suitable logo for Mauritius..mais bon…maybe half the money went into the pocket of u know who 😛

You said it right, national costume, not national garbage.
Given all the sponsors Mrs Obeegadoo gets, yes I can myself organise a far better competition than that. I am confident that there are above 100 companies, institutions which can do a far better job.

@Yashnah: hi!!!many other countries have traditional dresses as their national costumes.although these are not fashionable, they represent the culture of the country!!nevertheless a national costume does not restrict itself to a traditional dress.i accept the fact that the costume does not agree with everyone’s taste and i respect totally your opinion.i would also make it clear that i’m not saying that this national costume is perfect.but then, maybe you can surely make a better one.
in fact,in 2007 miss italy had a piece of cloth coloured green, white and red,the colours of the italian flag, as her national costume.
i think i’m not the one to describe the dress.there’s already a description next to the photo above.

Definition from wikipedia :
National costume (also: regional costume, folk costume or traditional garments) expresses an identity through costume which usually relates to a geographic area or a period of time in history, but can also indicate social, marital and/or religious status. Such costumes often come in two forms: one for everyday occasions, the other for festivals and formal wear.

There are ugly girls with beautiful brain…(am still not judging, just stating worldknown truth…)

@jon92: So, to answer your question :
“if you were to create the national costume, what would have it been?”
NO!
You know why? because that’s not my job and I believe that everyone should do what they are good at and give opportunity to others to show what they are able to do.
And would you create it if you were given the opportunity to do it?
I am asking this since it seems that you are perhaps someone, directly/indirectly related to the topic we are talking about. Just a wild guess.

@ReenaDKL: sure!!!i totally agree!!but with everyone criticizing the organisation and it having such a bad image, no wonder why the both beautiful and brainy girls do not participate!!!furthermore, dalysha is actually going to las vegas and here, i don’t see much support from mauritian people!!!if one does not have the support, how can you expect her to win?
other countries have all their citizens really encouraging and supporting their contestants!!!for example, venezuela, usa or philipines.
these countries have the culture of beauty pageants.in venezuela, there’s even a school for pageants and young girls at the age of 13 get plastic surgery!!i’m not saying that mauritians should do the same!but you can see why they win because their people are really encouraging and supporting their contestants!

We are not criticizing our Miss Mauritius! Not at all. That should be clear.
The discussion is clearly about the dress or “national costume” as you call it…
From your comment, you said : “no wonder why the both beautiful and brainy girls do not participate!!!”
And yes, we are criticizing the organisation, and mostly the designer…
Why? I think that you have already gone through what Mauritians here think about the “creativity” used here to represent Mauritius at an international level.

Man, I simply can’t go along with the winner of an arranged competition. It would be same like a guy gets admission to a medical school through backing, bought his diplomas and I tell him “go ahead! i will support you…you can operate on me coz i believe you are the best surgeon!”
c’mon, at least i say what i have on my heart. am not beautiful and would never have made even the top 1000 in any beauty contest, so simply dedicate myself to something at good at.
By d way, one of the nice competition here in Mauritius is “Face of te Year” for it really captures the beauty in them…it’s all about the face…so no bla bla and bla…

for example,Armaan is talking about Lida O’reilly making the dresses of miss india when we are supposed to talk about the national costume!!!in fact, lida o’reilly has not made any national costume but in this debate we’re talking about the national costume. so, i don’t see the linkage between an evening gown and a national costume.
