No wonder with such outfits, Mauritius is never among the finalists!
The last dress was a joke as well … remember guys it looked as if Mother Earth was going to do the catwalk ? I described it as “robe fleurie” but some friends innocently told me “robe gaumon la – robe feiyaz la?” ummm but yes they are right that’s what it looked like !
The idea the designers keep in mind when manufacturing these dresses is the colour of Mauritius or something relating to the flag of our dear country. Common …. do our political delegates wear red coat, blue shirt, yellow tie and green pants when they go on international conventions ?
When a foreigner will tell me that it is the first time he is meeting a mauritian, I’ll surely tell him “look at the beauty contest, the candidate wearing the dress which looks like a bad joke to you will be the next mauritian you will see and will surely remember more than me !”
The question is; does Mauritius really lack fashion designers ?

Even the journalists who have been to the last Miss Universe contest did not like our “gaumon” dress.
One journalist from Ireland said: “Pauvre Miss Mauritius, c’est comme si on l’avait trempée dans de la colle avant de la traîner dans la jungle.” I admit that “qu’on aurait pas mieux trouvé” to describe the stuff.
The person responsible of our Miss Mauritius contest defended the local creation and confirmed that the outfit will be exposed in a museum in Bahamas.

Shit! To be honest,as a Mauritian I like the imagination of the designer as we need to encourage her but presenting such dress for a competition, its a bit cheap. Last time it was a green dress? “Garden”, “Wood” and God knows the other reaction about the last dress. Now its this? Oh my God….Please save Mauritius from Bad Comments! AMEN

I am a close friend of one of the ex Miss Mauritius now established in Australia … she says that they sign a contract and they have to do and wear whatever is asked to them by the contest committee. Of course they get a monthly salary and some other benefits as long as they have the crown.

By d way, maybe Mauritius might actually win some awards:
Most ugly costume (they had to invent this award especially for that dress)
Funniest costume
Dress that will feature in the next Zombie/Horror movie…actually the dress will be the vilain..it will freak anyone!
Primerose should be banned from Mauritius. Send her to some far away desert island!!! she’ll dress monkeys out there!
She destroys the image of the country by sending horrors like this (may it be the girls or the dress…) to represent Mauritius…

hello everyone!!!
first of all i must say that i respect the opinion of everyone and that’s really nice that one can express oneself here.
then, i think it’s quite misleading to say what dalysha is wearing above is a dress!!!!that’s not a dress!!! it’s the NATIONAL COSTUME!!!
then, in the miss universe pageant, points are not attributed to contestants according to their national costumes or their dresses!!!
the national costume is not supposed to be a fashionable thing but it should represent the country in some way!!!have you ever seen the national costumes of the other countries???
nevertheless, the miss mauritius organisation is indeed not a perfect one and there is so much room for improvement.everyone is saying so many great things and what they would have done instead.but are you ready to take the responsibility to organise miss mauritius and do you really know something about beauty pageants???our country’s population is quite small and it is normal that the probability of us winning is smaller and to be a beauty queen does not require beautiful physical attraits!!!
last year, before that the irish journalist comment on the mauritian costume, did any of you say anything about the costume???
finally,it’s rather unfortunate that the evening gown of dalysha resembles a wedding dress.ok,thank u for reading my comment!!!
well, now,i’m waiting impatiently for your comments…

Hi!
Just wan’t to clear a tiny misunderstanding.
Nish’s comment was approved at the same time as yours. So, there was no way she could see your comment before leaving hers.
btw, thanks for participating in the post 🙂
My guess why none of us did comment about the previous costume : Perhaps Mauritians were not really interested until foreigners did actually dare to criticize the costume.
And as you can notice, immediately after the presentation of the costume this year, I was asked to write on this so that Mauritians can discuss about it before others do…
Since you mentioned the costumes of other countries, here’s the link to some of them : http://missosology.org/mu10/2010/07/21/miss-u-is-colorful-because-of-national-costumes/
Sharing it here so that other readers can compare 🙂
Finally, I will quote you :

@jon92, we cant just design a national constume any day! it should represent our cultures and tradition! being in the Designing field myself, i just cant interprete any of our Mauritian values in that, trying to represent multi-cultural society, doesnt mean we have to keep adding elements or colors to a particular design, that’s just too literal!
i wonder if they actually took time to study our culture!! even if we hav numerous cultures in our island, we do stand as one with our own identity and traditions, and where is that in the dress? i cant see it. is it anchored too deeply inside its concept?? that i cant say…

I get what you mean and I respect your opinion.
Talking about the other countries… We have nothing to do with them. Even if I compare, especially to the winning countries, our dress is barely comparable and hardly in a good way.
I know the judges there are professional but how objective can they be to not let themselves be disturbed by such? (practically no one notices the beauty of a girl all covered up with jewelry, it’s the same for the dress)
Now, I’m no fashion designer nor a collaborator of the Miss Mauritius but I do have a certain creativity and overall judgement.
Finally, in what ways does this dress represent Mauritius?
Sorry, it’s just big money stupidly spent on useless creativity. There’s a lack of strategy, creative communication and coherence. And unfortunately, these opportunities are always far away from Mauritians. Big design schools and popular degrees for nothing.

@Yashvin: well, sincerely, i don’t know what the world will say about it!!!i said it is unfortunate because the white dress made by Ashiana is not usually the type of evening gown weared by the contestants.but we’ll see!!!
well that’s better to post this link!!!the other readers will get to know a little about national costume but this link does not unfortunately show all the national costumes for this year!!!
very good for you and your blog to publish the “robe pour miss universe 2010”!!!but it’s incorrect to call the national costume as such, giving the impression that dalysha will wear this for the evening gown competition!!!
i think that people’s minds have a bit been influenced by the irish journalists comments.knowing that the organisation has not a good image in the country, this has worsened things more!!!

@zaheer: you really have great ideas but the costume is not bound to represent the country’s culture or tradition.i’ve said that it represents the country in any sort of way!!i would have liked to see a real mauritian culture but mauritian society is so complex for me.we claim that we live in multi cultural society without any conflict of cultures but i think it would be wrong to say that it’s totally true.i really appreciate that you consider all mauritian people as one!
p.s:have u read what this costume is supposed to represent?
LikeLike
@Natarajah Manick: you should read what it’s written next to the photo above.
to see other countries’ costumes can give us an idea how surprising each one is more than the other!!!
i think that creativity is part of what humans are for.
the beauty is not the only criteria to win the miss universe pageant!to be frank,i don’t know the pageant perfectly well because last year 6 of the top15 were handpicked by donald trump while it is supposed to be the judges’ responsibility to select the top15

I’d say we are one, and we DO have a culture, being from various parts of the world with different ancestral backgrounds doesnt mean we should be treated as such. all those could be combined into simple ideologies and conceptualised. am nt against what they tried to accomplish here, its good in a way! but here, what we can see is just an unacceptable literal interpretation…
