Right from the beginning, I was completely against this decision of the government of giving away free tablets to the college students. My stand on this topic is still the same despite an announcement made two months back about the blocked access to social networks (Facebook for example).
Though I haven’t had any hands-on experience of any of those Android-powered tablets, I wanted to write this post to keep a follow up on the topic :
Part 1
A few weeks back, the press did report several problems faced by the students as well as teachers. Bugs report about the software installed on the tablet as well as the hardware itself have been published.
Part 2
Today, l’express published an interesting article regarding those same tablets : None of the insurance companies want to insure those tablets because of those frequently reported issues. Additionally, the poor content of the academic material available, internet connectivity in schools among others have also been reported.
As written in today’s edition, only about 6, 100 out of the ordered 26,100 units have been distributed till now and for the same above mentioned reasons, the distribution of these tablets has been stopped.
So, instead of concentrating on their School Certificate examinations, now the students need to worry about their ‘gift’, a complete wastage of the tax payers’ money!

C ene bon move – le problem c le systeme d’enseignement. Oui, ena ene disconnect entre le system d’enseignement et le peripheral. Mais, ca pas veux dire ki distribution tablet pas bon. Fixer sa disfonctionnement la et tout sera retablit. Et avec tous nouvo zafaire, ena ki casser – sa c normale. La sur-mediatisation p fer couma dire trop bel zafaire ine arriver. Mo redire encore – donne tablets banne pitis et laisse zote tinker. Bizin ena boucou (esperer) ki vine wipe out zote device et install custom ROM. Sa banne tinkerers la c banne vrai leaders du futurs. Pas block technology! Fixer ou system d’agir, d’enseignment, et behaviour d’abord. Pas fer ti lesprit – critiquer sans donne solutions!!!

Do you think it is worth giving students tablets freely so that they tinker with it?
There are many factors we need to take account here.
The cost… li normale tablet ki pou distribuer li pou bannes qualités bien bo marcer. Mo pas croire ki ou en tant ki ene gouvernement ou ti pou aster Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 ou ti pou distribuer tout zeleves et enseignants. Ena l’argent publik ladans.
Deuxième c’est so nécessité et so utilité: Mo pas gagne comprend kifaire dimoune donne ça bannes zafrs la autant importance. Mo point c’est que pas supposer créer ene dépendance dans bannes système electronic coumsa. Tanque ene zefant jeune li ena ene grand capacité empranne par limême, faire calcul dans la tête… li vaut mieux encourage ça dans place faire tout par tablet.
Si coumadire sa bannes techologies la ki faire ene étudiant vine plis bon alle demande ou même zordi kote ki docteur ou préfère aller? Ou envie alle cote ça docteur ki check ou tension à partir ene l’appreil digital pez pez bouton oubien ou préfère guette ça docteur ki check ou poux à travers so la main et li fini dire ki problème ou ena? Ou même ou pou préfère alle kote ça vieux docteur la ou pou faire li plis confiance… Pourtant li pas ine empranne ek bel bel technologies.
Mo troisième point c’est ki garantie ou donne moi ki tout zélève sans exception servi tablette la avec ene certaine limite et conne contrôle li et li pas pou servi tablette la pou lezots zafrs? Ou même oune fek dire ki ena zeleves p amene tablette la lacaz p tinker with it et li p install custom ROM lor la… So this means that it defeated it’s official purpose. Si li p mette custom rom alors li capave faire n’importe quoi.
Mo pas dire li movais pou tinker mais mo penser li bizin ena so purpose. And not everyone is meant to tinker with everything.
Mo pas alle loin guette bannes ti zenfants ki ena bannes Galaxy S4 S5 bla bla bla. Observe zot manière agir dans société. Kote trouver zot resse braquer lor portab oubien tablette. Si sa qualité génération la ou envie then bien bon. Ene bon partie pena respect pou lezots. Enfin mo pas dire ki tout coumsa… Li vine en partie aux parents… Demande ou même en tant ki ene parent jusqu’à ki limite ou pou vraiment laisse ou zenfant tinker ek tablette sans ki ou monitor li dutout?
Ok nous laisse zenfant la vine ene hacker… good ki li conne système, mais eski ou pou encourage ou zenfant alle hack système gouvernement?
Technologie li zis ene outil… li pas la route limême et donc li pas ene zafr ki nous augmente nous dépendance lor la. Nous bizin conne nous limite et conner jusqu’à cote ça nous capave servi li et nous pas overuse li.
Ou gagne pou dire dimounes ti l’esprit… Avant lire ou bannes commentaires et détermine ou propre maturité en terme de communication… Ene de bannes ethics c’est personne pas supposer faire aucun personal attack lor ene lote dimoune dans ene discussion forum. Mo penser Yash pou confirme ça ek moi.
Bon mo point c’est zis que nous bizin pense bien avant nous faire n’importe ki zafr. Nous société ena ene mentalité ala nous guette ene lote pays couma Europe l’améric p faire ene zafr alors nous si nous faire pareil sans penser.
Nous bizin pense bien eski li vraiment nécessaire ki ene zenfant empranne par tablette. Plis grand professeur pou ene zelève c’est so parent… pas ene tablette. Mo d’accord li bon si ene zenfant tinker ek ene vieux tablette… Mais en tant ki ene grand, ene parent li aussi nous devoir montrer li so limite pou ki demain li pas alle faire ene zafr négatif à travers so connaissance ki li ena.
Et si ou envie ou zenfant tinker ek tablette donc aster tablette la ek ou propre casse et donne li pou tinker ek ça.
Moi avec mo ti l’esprit mone fini trouver quand p introduire tablette ki l’impacte ça capave ena… Ine annoncer ki pas pou ena facebook tousala, pou ena zis reading materials, jusque là bien bon. Mais eski cela veut dire ki ene parent li capave laisse so zenfant servi tablette la sans ki li monitor li. Mo pas p dire ki tout parents coumsa. Mais ena ene risque ki li capave créer ene tendance de ce sorte. Et demain si gagne kite problème, ene sel solution : Blame gouvernement.
Avec tout le respect monsier mo espérer ki mo pas ine blesse ou sentiment et mone ressi transmette mo l’opinion lors ça cas là. Acause en tant ki ène citoyen mauricien mo penser mo ena mo droit exprime mo l’opinion et bannes risque ki mo ine identifier… Ti l’esprit ou grand l’esprit. 🙂

2. c’est so nécessité et so utilité – software d’enseignement sur ca banne tablets la complemente les cours de classes, et aide zote esp. dans visualisation banne probleme et summaries banne notes. C system d’enseignement ki bizin ameliorer pou prend avantage tablets.
3. Li pas defeat purpose kan tinker – a coz li ene lot maniere utiliser tablets la. Bizin pas puni zenfants ki tinker. Le point est – tinkering ene avantage. Et purpose tablet c agir en temps que complement cours.
Pas bizin monitoring – sa l’age la c l’age de la decouverte. Laisse zote liberter tinker, explorer, communiquer et promouvoir le development de l’invidue futur – le hyperconnected individual.
Exprime to lopinion mais mo trouver ki c court d’esprit. To pas p trouve big picture.

Point 2. li aider c’est vrai, mais à ki limite? Couma ou fine fek dire bizin améliore système l’education, donc seki mo comprend,par seki ou fine dire, système education actuel pas vraiment prêt pou utilisation tablette. Ou même ou fine fek dire la hein… B nek dire moi ki amélioration ou proposer dans ça système l’éducation actuel la?

Point 3. Gouvernement p donne tablette la avec so bannes softwares et policies. Officiellement mo pas croire ine distribuer tablette la pou ki casse li oubien hack li. Mo penser en dimoune bizin empranne respecter ene contrat. Tinkering ene l’avantage oui, mais pas dans ce cas spécific la. Post la li lor tablette ki p distribuer officielement par le gouvernement. Donc mo bannes points li par rapport à ça.
Jusque là mo ine trouver combien ine empranne par tinker ek tablette la… Mais bon nous ava guetter combien vraiment p bénéficié ek tablettes… Let’s wait for the result. 🙂

I still believe in respecting a contract. If one really wishes to do anything with the tablet other than its official purpose, it is better for the parent to take the responsibility and buy another tablet. These tablets are cheap anyways.
Use but not abuse. Not everyone is going to “tinker” with a tablet for the purpose of learning. So here it is the responsibility of the parent to identify his child’s need and this is entirely another project that the government can help in by providing cheap tablets or second hand refurbished tablets for that purpose.
Well I am not really interested to maintain this conversation, and thanks you opened my mind, I knew there are different people around in this country, but first time I came across someone who tries to show others the big picture but wears blinkers himself.

I really like this way of reasoning – it shows that the pupils will eventually do the math and realise that it’s worth saving and purchasing one on their own rather than feeding insurance companies.
By the way, a tablet is just another tool – as long as you put in the minimum amount of effort, even without a tablet but with pen, paper and books, success is more probable than just drooling over the HD display.

Hey ou la ti lesprit. Compran ene coute – ena zenfants p amene zote tablet la caz, p crack li, p install custom ROM et p aprane computing by tinkering. Certes, ene ti groupe zenfants ki p fer sa mais c geniale kan meme!!! Sa banne tinkerers la c banne leaders. Pou creer tinkerers, bizin empower them – donne tablet c bien. Laisse zote play avec sa et create cool stuff.

Have you noticed that anything that is copy-pasted from abroad and rushed eventually turns out to be complete horseshit? Free transport for students, fluo kacjets for motorcycles, compulsory extinguishers for vehicles, etc, etc. I can bet my money that it will be the same for the new constitutional thing that is being brewed by the 3 local “experts”…
