New fixed speed camera
This weekend, several persons (including me) have been reporting the installation of a new speed camera along the Phoenix Beau Songes Link Road, some 1km away from the Phoenix Commercial Center.
The set up seems to be a different set of equipment from existing ones at Camp Chapelon. This one comprises of two huge flashes with a camera placed in between them, all of them on the same side of the road. Probably, the only camera can be turned around to shoot from one direction at a time. People also reported that speed camera detectors are able to capture their signals. Right now, I can’t say if they are 100% operational.
You are welcomed to report any new camera installed 🙂
Permis à Points
While listening to Radio Plus a few days ago, an interesting question was asked on air: let’s say that I hired your car and I got flashed while exceeding the limit. Who will be allocated the penalty points in this case? Can the picture be used to determine who was the driver? Can this be used in a court of justice? And if the driver was not identified?
At that precise moment, no one could give an answer. No wonder, the authorities always do things halfway.
Keep tuned to the blog for news update on the topics!
Go to a rental agency. Hire a car. Do 200km/h! Get flashed. And return the car. 🙂

How can you prove that my car was with X and it was not him/her or even the owner who was driving?

The authorities do not need to prove anything. You are, by default, responsible for traffic violations that happened through your vehicle, unless you can prove on the spot (to a law enforcer) or in court, that somebody else was using it at the time of the violation.

I find the system not ready to be put into practice when we talk abt the camera thing. It’s about penalizing the driver not the owner of the car. So, if I have a car and all the five house members drive it, am I supposed to keep a log book into the car?
If the authority find your car beyond the speed limit, don’t they need evidence to incriminate the person at the wheel at the moment of the action? Don’t this need to be proven by the ones who are putting the blame on you? I might perhaps watch NCIS too much but let’s say that there’s a crime in which my gun is used. Does that mean that I killed the person or will the police investigate properly to gather proofs that can prove that the gun was effectively used by person X at the time the crime was committed?

Whatever method you use (log book, plain memory etc.), one of the drivers will ultimately have to take the blame.. unless your car was stolen (but that’s another story). If no-one willingly takes the blame, then the case will probably be reported to court.. I imagine the penalties will escalate in such cases… I think this is perfectly fair, people need to be made accountable..

We will wait and see how they handle things. Remember, no law is perfect (not in mauritius lol) 🙂

In principle, you have to be responsible for your own car..
Anyways about the DLC things..the big question is why do we have to present a copy of the DLC to the police whenever they do their routines check…It is the court that has to decide how many points to give to you depending on the “offences” …not the policeman.
Like the saying goes “100 zours pour voleur, 1 zour pour la police”…this one should be more like “100 zours pour la police, 0 zours pour le peuple”

Well, I’m reporting about the same kind of equipment that has just been fixed on the sidewalk at Paillote, not far from the entrance to the Candos hospital. (See photos here and here.)

I will be posting the picture in a new post, with credits to you of course. And in some time, I will create a map with all reported fixed speed cameras.

i got a question about this new drivers license regulation.
in my case for instance am currently residing in the uk and won’t be back for another two or three years, if when i come back and start driving on the next day and am stopped by the police, am i going to be fined???
since obviously i won’t have the new drivers license.

Probably yes. I’m pretty sure because the counterpart thing becomes part of your driving license. When you reach Mauritius, the first thing you need to do is to go to the line barracks.

Forgot to reply a part of your question.
Yes, you can write a letter of authorization and give it to someone else. You will also need to hand over your National Identity Card to your representative.
