Democracy, Law & Order : Recent happenings in Mauritius

I long wanted to write a new article but I could not think of anything interesting enough to pull people out of the festive mood. I kept on writing and later deleting the posts until I wrote this title.

The lady in red

For those who are completely outdated when it comes to local news, you should read this article I previously wrote days ago. Following this incident, the local media started to talk about this famous lady until the court ordered two newspaper groups to stop writing about this lady, her personal life as well as her success story and her children. (A hint: Read recent editions of Le Mauricien and l’express. ) This official interdiction was done through a ‘gagging order’ issued late on Saturday. Even professionals found it strange. Oh yes, in the national assembly, the prime minister made much effort to justify her actions.

The ‘thief’ who killed himself in police cell

On a similar note, I wish to add that the court came to the following conclusion in the case of the man, Mr Ramdhonee, found dead in his police cell. The man was arrested after he was suspected to steal a watch in the personal bungalow of the prime minister.

You don’t need to be an expert in the new Facebook game (Criminal Case) to draw your own conclusions…

The media and the authorities

And without the private radios and daring journalists, I would definitely feel as a complete dumb in front of the national television. How silly can these TV journalists be? You just need to sit in front of your tv set, nothing more. Talking about the media, this makes me remember the restrictions imposed by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) which forbid private radios to broadcast live radio programs (with listeners calling and stuffs) with regards to the recent elections in the country.

Street hawkers

I don’t think that this topic suits well in today’s post but coincidentally, I wrote about the same topic exactly two years ago and also a few months ago. Street hawkers invaded the capital during the last weeks of December 2012. Authorities allowed them to operate while they are still looking for a viable long term solution. Walking in the overcrowded streets was exhausting and frustrating too. Those who have been to Port Louis very recently know what I’m talking about.

They are simply incredible and adapt so well to the customer needs. Before Christmas  they were trading in toys and before the new year eve, they were all selling fireworks. Nowadays, they are selling school stationary lol. And in a few days, they will be back to their normal business, selling fruits.

This problem remains unsolved since years now…

Democracy? Justice? Where???

I don’t know what you think about these recent happenings in our country but I completely feel insecure because I don’t have privileged contacts, neither in the government nor in the mafia. I’m just a ‘normal’ Mauritian.

Feel free to add anything which I have probably missed and be careful while writing, I’m moderating severely because as I said previously, I don’t wanna go behind the bars…
