Price of Petrol (March 2011)

The PPC (Petroleum Pricing Committee) has reviewed the prices of petroleum products which were previously updated on the 22th January 2011. The new prices are as follows :

Essence : Rs 51.30/L + Rs2.80 (previously Rs 48.50/L)
Diesel : Rs 43.50/L + Rs3.60 (previously Rs39.90/L)

As you have probably noticed in the above graph (Click to enlarge), the price of L’essence has crossed the Rs50/L bar for the first time ever in Mauritius while Diesel reached Rs51.20 on October 2008. You are on The Web Site which has been monitoring the prices for years. The latest price update on the STC web site is dated few months back (Oct 2010)

As from tomorrow, take care while pushing on the accelerator pedal 😉

  1. Nearly 80% of the vehicles here in France have diesel engines but I have a “essence” car because in the long run it makes me save money. I travel 30 000 kms per year with it and I’m running on 4.5L/100km.

  2. bah, ‘la goute d’eau qui fait…?’ kinda of sick of all those climbing prices. Big hit on my budget, especially because I have to travel long distances everyday, the basic food rise sucks and it’s close to impossible to save that much cash for the future…

I wonder how people with low earnings manage to live (or survive) with whatever they have.

I’m afraid that any ‘unknown major’ event might trigger and add up to the bunch of the already existing social issues we already have on the island

  3. There’s one more thing about petrol over the world. Japan is a big fuel importer. It is now undergoing a huge crisis but has the capacity to quickly regenerate. When this happens, Japan will import more petrol, increasing the demand on a low supply. As a result, we will soon be hitting unbelievable petrol rises.

  5. @Muzzammil: Distance maximisation actually depends on how you drive. There are some techniques that allow you to run longer distances. For example: shifting your gears around 2000 rotations/minute. Diesel is cheaper for sure but I tested my car over 1 week driving only at 90kms/h (normally you run at 130kms/hr here in France) and the car did go to 600kms on 35l of petrol. I posted on this here: http://banalit.es/586 .

  6. Kee Cheong Lee Kwong Wing hits (chiffres à l’appui) where it hurts the most: iIt’s clearly a question of passing the hot potato of STC’s incompetence in hedging onto us, that’s what we are being forced to pay for now…
What is most despicable in this is that our political leaders fail to recognise that when fuel prices were high in 2008, all commodity prices went up, but when fuel prices eased down duing the past two years, commodity prices remained high – can anyone explain why?
And who enjoyed and wallowed in such obscenely high prices all these years?
And now all economic operators are wailing and screaming for another adjustment!! Bugger them all!
