The Kindle 3 is available for purchase from the island. However, I can’t confirm (yet) if other products can shipped to Mauritius for the time being. I will check and update the post later on…
I received my Amazon Kindle (3 – latest generation) today after purchasing it on Friday night. It reached Mauritius yesterday and DHL delivered it to my office during the day. While waiting for the blog review, I can already tell you that the Kindle is WOW…
After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression!
Coming back to the main news, 1 thing that is important to note, the ZIP Code, which always causes problem while shipping to Mauritius. For my first purchase on Amazon, I used the ZIP Code “230” and it worked well. I remember having to play with the fields at first, but “230” was finally accepted.

I’ll buy a Kindle during the December holidays. I just love reading books too but I don’t want to turn blind at a young age through the mobile phone’s LCD screen. 😛
Anyway, I just love Amazon.com and their service. I bought an audio CD and 4 books from them. In December my shipment got late and I was really worried and I wanted to know what happened to it. Just sent them an email to inquire and surprisingly, they refunded the whole shipping fee! That’s just amazing. 😀
Normally, you can only buy the Kindle, books, audio CDs and DVDs from them. If you want to know if an item ships to Mauritius, just check the Product Details. 😉
Another tip for Amazon.com users, do check books which are available at Bargain Price. They are really REALLY cheap and great. And it seems that when you label items as GIFT, the customs process it faster. I’m not sure though. Normally I use the zip code 742CU001. 🙂

I got my Kindle in July of last year but I guess they were shipping the kindle to Mauritius even before that. But yeah not all items are shipped to Mauritius from amazon. Didn`t you buy the leather cover? It`s quite useful.

Call me old school but I’m a huge “paper” book consumer and just love to line them up after reading them. Well, this is very personal anyways. Good thing to know that Amazon ships to Mauritius. Living in France I switched off it to play.com because you don’t have to pay for shipping there.

As for Amazon thing, I always thought that items could not be shipped here. That’s why I came up with this post, google will love it 🙂
If you get the chance to hold one and virtually turn the pages, go for it @Pépé le Beagle. You will love it, and you can end up organising them in collections on your kindle or archive them on your amazon’s account (for later retrieval).

I got my Kindle shipped to the UK some months ago – before Amazon opened the UK Kindle store. It took about a week to arrive. When the UK store opened, it was very easy to switch to Amazon.co.uk from the US site.
I said that I would wait at least 12 months before I upgraded to the Kindle 3. That’s next month. This time I’ll get a UK 3 pin plug for the power adapter.

I tried buying some books on amazon, but faced the post code problem. I find that quite bizarre as I remember buying a book posted to my address in Mauritius some years back. I’ve tried all of the alternatives you suggested above but I’m still stuck. As a result, I had to pay enormous shipping fees on Barnes and Noble…
Could anyone be of any help with this post code business?

@Sims : Yes, DHL delivers it at your doorstep (or any address you specify).
For the VAT charges, you need to pay DHL who calls you some days before to inform you about the vat amount. Hence, ho hassles to go to the parcels office or wait for the custom clearance. They do everything.

Address Line 1, Address Line 2, City, State/Region/Province, ZIP (I believe its 742CU001), Country (Mauritius) and Phone Number (format).

Use the Address Line 1 for the name of your street,
City for name of village/town
State : Put N/A there
ZIP : I never understand which one works. 230 was good for me.
Country : You got it right

AFAIK, Amazon only ships a limited number of products to Mauritius, such as books, CDs and other small items.
They cannot ship electronics etc due to warranties, licenses and other stuff. Globalization? Meh! Why can’t all sellers ship worldwide?

Unless someone can help you immediately, you will need for me to reach home and log into Amazon to check mine.
Will get back to you if you havent succeeded but its surely something with the number format. Try fooling around with the numbers, adding 00, or + etc.

Had no problems with order of the Kindle from Amazon (USA). It was delivered by DHL in 2011. It is a good investment for me, easy to download e-books, you save on postal charges and delivery delays for paper books. One regret is that we cannot download French e-books from Amazon.FR they always refer you to Amazon.COM which does not have the same selection of French books, pity.

At the time I ordered I had no idea about this custom permit requirement. I presume that DHL did all the necessary clearance or maybe it was not enforced at that time. Check with DHL.

I dont think that you might need it because the device main function is not for wireless transmission. However, you might find it useful to call the post office itself or DHL to enquire, just to be on the same side.

Hi, I see some people having trouble with amazon shipping address. I also have the same problem as it does not accept the address, though I used the same address on ebay. When checking out, it considers the city I put as the last line of address, not the country. I put Curepipe as my city because it was a requirement by amazon. Is there anything not properly done?

Well, since I purchased on Amazon only a few number of times, I’m not of much help here. All that I can say is keep signed in with your account and look for items with international shipping. Normally, Amazon will let you know if it can ship to your Mauritian address.
