Really, I am fed up reading and hearing the news aboit Bhai Harish.
Bhai Harish is on a hunger strike, Bhai Harish is in the hospital, Bhai Harish is back to the cell, Bhai Harish has refused to drink his medicines, Bhai Harish does not want to pay his bail out of jail, Bhai Harish has blabla blabla!
Quick brief about the situation in Mauritius:
Sale by Levy is The event of the moment.
Since a few years, many people have witnessed the seizure of their property due to the failure of the repay of debts to the bank. Very recently, the government has finally agreed to help a few of the persons who have a genuine reason behind the failure of repaying back their loans. Some of these conditions are :
- The beneficiary must not have any other property (land, house, etc) on their name.
- The govt will not help those who have invested in their business and thus have put themselves at risk.
- The govt will help the person in case the head of the family has died, or the person had a serious accident and can not work anymore, etc etc.
I find this decision of the government acceptable to help the persons in real need, and these conditions imposed are totally fair.
As the Minister of Finance said recently, if the government helped all of them, then it would have been unfair towards those who are working day and night to earn their living.
And Bhai Harish?
Justement!
The main actor in this real life story is Bhai Harish. He has always supported the victims.
Very recently, Bhai Harish and the victims have started a hunger strike. After being pushed away from “Jardin de la Compagnie” by the Police, they continued their strike at some other place. However, they were later arrested for illegal public gathering in Port Louis, when they started to protest in front of the court.
While some of the protestants paid their bail, our famous Bhai Harish refused to do so, and continued his strike in the jail lol. Today or yesterday, he was sent to the hospital since he was having health issues. Now, on every media, he is on the headlines and I even heard an interview of his wife, who was revealing that he was a heart patient, he is not taking his medicines, blabla blabla. My opinion? I agree that
- these persons are in financial difficulty.
- some of them need help (genuine cases defined by the Government)
Living in a democracy, the victims totally have their right to express themselves but however, there is a limit to everything.
By going on a hunger strike, they are definitely trying to make the government crack and give them what they want and in the way they want. One of the means to achieve their aim is by taking advantage of the Amnesty which will fight for the right of humans.
A small joke about Bhai Harish
Bhai Harish, Paul and Aneerood are in a resto in Paris.
Aneerood (avec so francais potisse) ; “Donnez mwa 1 tasse de café”,
Paul (avec so excellent francais) : “Je désire prendre un thé aux gingembre, s’il vous plait, Merci”.
The waiter notes down the order and now, its the turn of Bhai Harish.
Bhai Harish (comme touzours, li envie donne li l’importance) : “Moi je veux prendre un dithé avec limon”
The waiter did not understand anything, and says “Vous voulez un thé quoi (Tékoi)?”
Bhai Harish : “Ou ena Tekoi? donne mwa 2!”

I believe the situation has been over dramatised, there is no need for a hunger-strike and certainly not having very small children participating. Bhai Harish should do his homework before jumping in at the deep end. When you go into details you find that some of those demonstrating are not genuine cases. The government is taking genuine cases into consideration but they are not there to rescue irresponsible people. It suggests to me that in this country some people still believe in the welfare state system, which is a past myth.

well, this isnt simply a matter of politics. because it is a serious matter with serious consequences among the population, its normal politicians would involve themselves. the strange thing here is that, while we have so many elected MPs, its sum1 whoz been away from the political scene for a long time whose actually involving himself. its a pity the opposition are busy jockeying for tickets and alliances for the next election instead of doing their job, looking out for the people.
sale by levy is a real problem in mauritius. imagine getting a loan of 400 000 with a land worth 2 million as guarantee. if you cant pay, the bank or insurance company seizes the land and just sells it at watever price it gets as long as it recovers its money. u lose 2 million worth of property for a pittance.
secondly, the conditions in which banks do give loans are dubious. therz a case (its hearsay so i cant verify) where an aged couple asked for a loan from the biggest commercial bank in the country and as only guarantee they had their house that was well located and worth many times that loan. they were given the loan even tho they couldnt pay it, just coz their property would be worth much more to the bank afterwards. Again i cant verify, but it goes to show how bad the situation is. there are no safeguards against loans given without ensuring that the loanee can repay it.
there are many cases like that where people lose a valuable piece of land or even all they have, so thats y they call themselves victims. of course there are those who went asking for trouble, by taking on loans of value greater than they cud pay, but wen u are really in need of money and you go asking for a loan, few will bother about the terms and conditions being rite, as long as they are getting solace from their current probs.
in all this i think that in conditions where there was not enough research on the part of the loaner or the loaner knowingly gave a loan of a huge amount knowing the loanee cudnt pay the interest, the laon repayment should simply be cancelled and the loanee returned his property. that at least will serve as a safeguard against people giving such loans. currently this is a loophole in the system and they are exploiting that loophole.
its high time this was put right.

He acts as a watchdog to the society. But when things are overdone or turn into politics, it can only bring ridicule and disgrace to his “fights”. Which is the case actually. strike is something important, it shows that a group of people are suffering, if everyone just stays silent, and waits for the justice to be done… specially in mauritius.. this will never occur..

To the Carrot man: Please dont be a carrot, before making such a statement, why don’t you do some research on Bhai Harish? He is the most courageous Mauritian I have ever seen. He has done more for this country than our elected – over paid – corrupted-representatives. For those who think he is being political – You cannot influence anything in mauritius without having to use political tactics. As for going hunger strike, this is the ultimate sacrifice that human being can do in order to have his voice heard. As you know well, the Mauritian media is biased and owned by the capitaists. So please, support him, he is fighting for a good cause.

Tushal- please be more specific. See more people? Name them.Can you please mention a few living mauritians who went on hunger strike for the common people. This “say nothing” and “do nothing” mentality has lasted long enough my friend. We are the new generation, we’ve got to do something about it.
Comrades, we have to choose alternative news sources. Abandon the mainstream, biased news sources. Keep it up yashvin.

Maybe you are not aware, he started this fight 6 years ago. I cannot possibly see someone building a possible come back to the political arena by fighting for a cause and for so long. Instead of suspecting an individual who is defending the victims, why don’t we turn the big guns towards the perpetrators of this inhumane business? You may not like his personality because of the way his portrait has been painted by the media for a long time. I will support anyone who fights for the ordinary Mauritian.

there are rumours (hearsay) that the sale by levy were conducted in corrupted ways that caused the sale to be completed at below the value of the property. Before you organised a levy on a seized property, a valuator should value the property and the sale would start by that value or close to it. The remaining amount after paying the bank would have to go to the loanee. But I heard it happened that the sale was over before even the sale being organized! And at very underpriced rates… That would mean the person who took the loan would still be in debt even after the levy.
I agree that the government will only selectively repay debts. Cause these genuine cases can really be called as victims. But some people really take loans on their houses for gambling and other vices. That’s the right decision but it’s incomplete. An independent body should investigate each of these sales for possible corruption. Put ICAC on it (anyone can report to ICAC without proof). Have these victims done that as well?

@yusuf: The idea is to prevent the status quo rite? or else u gtta explain wat u mean by status quo.
and the logic behind that is to discourage the giving of such loans in the first place, and to stop allowing people who give such loans to go off scot-free.
